Creating DVDs
From Berkshire Linux Users Group
Creating DVDs in Linux is still not one of the easiest tasks, but it is getting much simpler. Recently I was doing some research for Bryan on this subject, and I came across the following tools and tutorials:
[edit]
Tools
- DVDStyler Looks to be the simplest and prettiest DVD menu creation program out there. It's not in the Ubuntu repositories yet, though, so you'll have to install it from source.
- Varsha is another authoring system. It packages video conversion, menu creation, and even the actual burning of the DVD into one app. It's not quite as pretty as DVDStyler, and it also isn't in Ubuntu's repositories, but if you're looking for one-stop-shopping, this is the way to go.
- Mencoder is part of the mplayer package, and will convert just anything to DVD video format. Here's the command to convert any file to NTSC DVD.

Guides
- A guide to creating DVDs using DVDStyler and k3b.
- An Ubuntu-centric guide using command line tools mostly. It's fairly high level and so you should be able to follow along without too much trouble. The results I don't think are as pretty as a graphical menu creation system, but it'll get the job done quickly and painlessly.
- A very detailed and in-depth guide to creating DVDs. It talks about a DVD's structure and gets very technical. If you're interested in learning more about DVDs or just want to get more 'under the hood', this guide is for you!
I hope this information will help you author DVDs using Linux! I didn't cover creating video or getting it onto your system. I think that's better handled somewhere else.
